About us

Blackpool Better Start is about giving every new baby in Blackpool a better start in life.

Our aim is to improve speech and language, diet and nutrition, and social and emotional development from birth to 4 years of age across the town.

We work with families to find the right support for them at a personal and community level.

Better Start Training Programme for Blackpool Council staff

Brain Architecture Game

Interactive session with delegates working in groups of 3 or 4, exploring the powerful role of relationships, experiences, and stresses on early brain development, what improves it, what derails it, and what consequences can it have for society?
This course builds on Trauma Informed approaches all professionals use and heightens the awareness of the lifelong impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their effects on brain development.

Adversity and Trauma - The Impact, Coping Strategies and Protective Factors for our Blackpool Clients and Workforce

Tier 1 Trauma Informed Care (TIC) Training.
This training explores the impact trauma and adversity has on a person’s lifespan, the coping strategies and self-soothing mechanisms adopted, and the ways we can support.
The session considers us as individuals and as a workforce, looking at what impact working with children and families who have suffered trauma may have on us, how we can recognise this, and what protective factors are in place.

Improving Communication Workshop

This session will provide an overview of what parents have told us and will also introduce our new campaign that promises to have cut through with our families. Is it time to change our approach if we want to make a difference?

Fathers and Perinatal Mental Health

Multi-agency Champion training. This one-day Fathers and Mental Health Training will be delivered by local Champions who have been trained through the Institute of Health Visiting on behalf of North West Coast Strategic Clinical Network. By using a holistic family centred approach, practitioners can enable mothers and fathers to prepare better for becoming parents.

Introduction to Working with Fathers

The Fatherhood Institute have developed a bespoke training package for the Blackpool Early Years Workforce, which will give a national picture of fatherhood and inclusive practice, as well as recommendations for the Blackpool work force.

This introductory training will complement local approaches and workforce development activities.

Workforce training for those in contact with fathers is key to changing perceptions and reducing barriers for engagement.

Any Blackpool Council staff member (excluding students and agency staff) can book using the Learning section of Employee Self Service.
