Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Blackpool
Quarterly Newsletter – January 2020
Welcome to our SEND quarterly newsletter. Last year was an exciting and challenging year. There were some wonderful things in SEND to be proud of in Blackpool…
Highfurlong opened their new enterprise pod called The Gift Box. This is a retail space that allows students to showcase and promote the wide range of products that they have designed and created. They are all learning about business and working life in a realistic way. A fantastic achievement. The Gift Box is open every Thursday 9.30 am – 11 am selling a variety of greeting cards, printed items and gifts, during term time.
Highfurlong also won the award for the Happiest Secondary School 2019 in November 2019 at an award ceremony in Bolton.
Keith Berry, Head teacher at Blackpool’s Park Community Academy was presented with the Gold Award at the Pearson National Teaching Awards. An honour that goes to a teacher deemed to be the best in the UK. Keith has led Park Community Academy, a special school on Whitegate Drive, through four successive Outstanding Ofsted inspections over 22 years.
The Local Offer has been updated with new information for all children and young people who have special educational needs or disabilities aged 0 – 25. We are connecting and working closely with parents, young people and services across Blackpool to ensure that information for special educational needs is accessible for everyone.
We have a lot to be proud of in Blackpool. Thank you to everyone across all schools in Blackpool, who work hard to ensure our schools are an inclusive environment that allow all children with special educational needs or disabilities reach their full potential. The SEND team are fully aware of the time, effort and commitment this takes from every member of staff in every school.
2020 will bring new challenges and new achievements. Please keep in touch with what is going on in Blackpool either through the www.blackpoollocaloffer.co.uk website, the www.fyidirectory.co.uk or the facebook page for Blackpool’s Local Offer.
The Parents Forum are hosting an event on Wednesday 11th March 2020 to share information about local services and the Blackpool Council SEND team. Please keep in touch through their facebook page to book a place at the event.
Our best wishes to you all for 2020.
