Parents, Carers and Siblings

Looking after a child or young person with SEND can be complex.  There is help available.  Blackpool Council's Local Offer aims to provide key information at a glance and then also provide more detailed information through key word searches within the web site.

Blackpool Council are involving parent, carers, children and young people in developing their Local Offer.  We would like to hear your views about the Local Offer so that we can continually design and review our information.  Please use the Feedback/Contact form to tell us what you think.  Thank you.

July 2019 Meeting - The group consulted about the look and content of the Local Offer website.  As a result of that, we have started the process of developing a new visual for the Local Offer to help with navigation.  We also agreed to improve and review the information on pages within the website.

During August 2019 - The group did not meet during the summer months, but work has continued on improving the website content and clarity of communicating the messages on the site.

September 2019 Meeting - The group met to agree a new front page, which will be launched shortly.  The group also talked about the importance of improving the communication to parents and young people using social media.  We are endeavouring to respond to that and will provide an update on social media shortly.

Thank you to the Parent's Forum for inviting us to attend their meeting in September.  Feedback regarding the Local Offer website is ongoing.  Facebook is now up and running again.  Thank you for your help.

October's meeting reviewed the marketing materials for the Local Offer and the new look front page of the web site.  Great to see some new faces at this meeting.

Thank you to the Parents' Forum for organising the day at Blackpool Zoo on October 23rd.  We used the opportunity to collect information from parents, young people and young children to collect information about what people think about how information is shared in Blackpool currently.  We will discuss these results at the next Local Offer meeting.

January 31st 2020 - the parents helped give feedback on Blackpool Council documents, including a new SEND booklet.  We listened to your comments and have produced a SEND booklet in clear simple language which explains the whole of the SEND service to parents and SENCo's.

Wednesday 11th March 2020 - The Parents Forum (with help from Blackpool Council) organised an event for parents on 11th March to explain and introduce services across Blackpool that might help and be of interest for parents with SEND in their family.  The event was well attended - the feedback from the event will be discussed at the next Local Offer Consultation Group meeting.

The Government has produced a SEND Guide for Parents and Carers.

It covers:

  • the law and guidance on which the system is based
  • places to go for help and further information
  • details about changes to the system from 1 September 2014

It may also be useful for staff dealing with the parents and carers of children and young people with SEND in:

  • schools and colleges
  • early years education settings

The guide should be used alongside the Special education needs and disability code of practice: 0 to 25’.

You may also find the easy-read version of this guide for parents and carers and for children and young people useful.

Blackpool Disability Register is a list of children and young people in Blackpool who have special educational needs and disabilities; and who receive or may need to receive services from social care, health services, education or services provided by voluntary organisations.

Children and young people eligible for inclusion on the register are also eligible for a Max Card. This is a discount card that families of children with additional needs can use at venues across the UK to get free or discounted admission.

Terms and conditions apply and we reserve the right to withdraw the scheme at any time. Cards are valid for a specified time period and you will need to make a new up to date application to be included on the register when the card is due for renewal. We will send you further information when you make a registration request.
